The book that sent me down the paper engineering road.

I found this book 10 years ago in a used-book store. Looked interesting, bought it, and the rest is history. Since then I've purchased every book I can find on this subject, including Mark's latest (Paper Engineering With Elastic Bands). I make my own greeting cards using Mark's first book as a guide. The recipients never fail to tell me the card is a "keeper!" I then branched out and made a book for my 4-year old niece. The other books in this category have given me inspiration but Mark's books are my primary reference.

This book is a real gem for teachers interested in acquainting children with the engineering principles of pop-ups both as an appreciation of pop-ups they enjoy and introduction into making their own. Well thought out directions and a place to store your samples for future reference are provided.

Excellent, clear techniques... great for classes.

I teach paper engeneering in my 3-Dimensional Design class and have finally found a book with MECHANICAL systems. I have used Paul Jackson's "The Pop-Up Book" for classes for years but it lacked the levers and other mechanical movements found in Mark Hiner's "Paper Engeneering..." What we have typically done to understand mechanisms was to reverse engeneer our own collection of pop-up books but this has often destroyed our books! The quantity of designs in Mr. Hinner's book is a bit limited, and it DOES need the augmentation of actual pop-up books to see the variety of unique solutions to the same basic concepts.

Query Tuning Title Worthy of Your Bookshelf

Benjamin presents a thorough explanation of the entire query optimization process, and a lot of the background you'll need to make sense of it all. He treats indexes, statistics and plan caching, as well as how to deal with common issues such as parameter sniffing. He explains popular options like Optimize for Ad Hoc Workloads and Forced Parameterization, and how they change the way plans are cached and reused. He also discusses many undocumented features and trace flags that can help you better understand (or coerce) SQL Server's approach to your query, and how to use Trace, Extended Events and DBCC commands to review the decisions the optimizer had made and the impact they've had.

There is also a good portion of content dedicated to many new SQL Server 2014 features, including In-Memory OLTP ("Hekaton"), clustered columnstore indexes, incremental statistics, and the new cardinality estimator.

The book ends with a complex but informative chapter on query optimizer limitations that lead to sub-optimal plans, and how to use hints and plan guides to work around them.

There are a couple of omissions, like issues with auto-update of stats for filtered indexes, and the new DMV sys.dm_exec_query_profiles.

But otherwise, this has quickly become a convenient reference for me; the dog-ears are already replacing several of my bookmarks to blog posts that happen to mention some obscure detail or trace flag, and in many cases Benjamin has described it in more detail and/or framed it with better context.

I think anyone familiar with T-SQL could use this book to help them get up to speed pretty quickly, even having zero knowledge of the optimizer before diving in.

Exceptional book, deep technical content made approachable

Benjamin is a great author with significant SQL Server experience and this new book further solidifies his place in the community.

Query processing and its inner workings are extremely dense technical concepts that Benjamin is able to present to the reader in a very approachable readable manner. The book elegantly walks you through the major components of the query processor and dives deep where need.

The code examples in the book are concise and accurately reenforce the key points the author is trying to convey in the text.

The book excels at connecting very complicated query processing topics together for the reader in a simple and approachable manner.

It covers the many new features of SQL 2014, including In-Memory OLTP, incremental statistics, the new cardinality estimator and the new features added to columstore indexes.

There few shortcomings with this book, I would have preferred citations throughout the book. Key concepts are introduced without citation and I would like to jump into some topics, specifically into the materials the author used when writing. The book does have an exceptional reference section, but there is no connection back to the text.

This book is now an a permanent fixture in my library of SQL Server references that I will likely need to replace when I wear it out.

Besides occasionally checking the execution plan in MS Query Analyzer, I never gave much thought to how MS SQL optimized queries. It was a black box and I felt I didn't need to know what happened in there. After running into some issues at work with long-running queries, I began to earnestly seek more information. Mr. Nevarez's book is a one-stop shopping ultimate resource on all things I have been learning in the past year. There is valuable information for both the novice and the expert, both the developer and administrator. The language used does not talk down to the uninitiated nor does it bore the professional. The text encompasses three types of samples for all three types of learners: graphs and photos, hands-on drills and written descriptions. The chapters do not need to be read in sequence making it easy to research a specific topic without reading the entire book. My absolute favorite part was the documentation of the Microsoft "undocumented" flags, options and parameters for use when investigating slow queries. This book is the newest tool in my toolbox and it should be in your toolbox too!

Disappointing

I anxiously awaited the sequel to part 1 and unfortunately upon completion I did not have the overall feeling of satisfaction that I felt at the end of pt. 1. The situationship that Smoke and Karreuche were involved in was seemingly endless causing the reader to have a feeling of tedium while reading. Geek and Tommy were plain and simple a--holes. They have absolutely no redeeming qualities and if the truth be told should have been ousted from the crew long ago. I thought Smoke was a lot smarter than his actions showed in the book. The fact that he was sleeping with the enemy and was unable to pick up any negative or bad vibes from her spoke volumes to me. Even Shantinka was leary of Tango upon meeting her and she plainly stated she was a snake up to no good. Karreuche, Karreuche, Karreuche, when she continued to deal with Geek after she became aware of his marital status I lost a little bit of respect for her. Not only did she allow herself to be regulated to the sidelines as a sidepiece, but on top of that she willingly accepted his physical abuse. How or Why she felt it necessary to stick by a man that constantly physically, mentally, and spiritually abuse her person was mind boggling to me. She left the blinders on so long that when she finally became aware of what was happening in her face she consciously chose to continue in this toxic relationship. While I totally disliked the Draya character, Karreuche deserved that a-- kicking and then some. The fact that she had a friend like Shatinka who was willing to speak plain truth without sugar cxoatinf or downplaying the error of Karreuche's ways was extremely rewarding.

This was a great part 2! I couldn't put this down. Plewse , please, please, why is Eyana getting away with murders. I can't believe she killed Kareem and now she was able to kill her lover Brad and dump his death on CheChe. Please let her go in part 3. Another one deserving karma is Tangi. The girls were worse than the men. Just crazy set-ups and beat downs. I'm sorry I don't like Draya, but I'm happy she gave Geek and CheChe a nice mace filled beating. CheChe may be young, but she should know better than to cheatb with a married man. She was a weak side chick. I'm glad she moved on with Dale, but rooting for her and Smoke. I really hope she matures in part 3. She had to stand up for herself and put Tangi, Draya and Eyana in their place. Especially if she's hooking up with Smoke. She needs to hook up with Lala and get schooled. Aw Geek so disappointed me. I thought maybe, his character would have some explanation about Draya. I so was not expecting this, but not surprised. Him and Tommy deserve a slow painful exit. I hope Shauntika is OK. Wow! The ending with CheChe's mom. Like wow! I'm so geeking for part 3!!! Lucinda hurry up!!!!

If she don't stop playing with my emotions like this! Geek I thought he would be better than that with his selfish ass. Tommy was no better I can't wait for them to get theirs. I'm happy that CheChe was showing some growth and hopefully she'll find her happily ever after. That ending was like whoa! I can't wait for part 3.
