A real Christian life lived, simple like Jesus, and profound like Jesus

Phyllis did her job well in detailing Sundar's brief life. She begins nearly every chapter with one of his parables. Sundar was so rare an individual, having a godly mother's example and his own spiritual hunger from early youth. He was no less a sinner than the rest of us until, - until that night when everything changed and he bowed his whole being to Jesus and never looked back. For a while Sundar traveled and taught a lot (even coming to America) but was grieved by the state of the church both in Europe and here, and went home to rather minister to the Hindus and Buddhists of India and Tibet. After his conversion, Sundar's was a life lived to the full.

About the Author
Craig has been involved in sports since he was six years old. He competed in soccer, taekwondo, and football. Craig received his black belt by age 12 and soon became an accomplished athlete in three different sports. Craig went to college to earn a Bachelors Degree in Sports Medicine, a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology, a second Masters degree in Biomechanics, and is presently working on a Ph.D in Biomechanics. Craig is a Nationally Certified Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers Association and a Nationally Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. For the past few years he has been involved in both human and veterinary (i.e. canine, equine, and bovine athletes) sports medicine and athletic performance research. He is also the CEO and founder of athleteproject.com.

Are you the target audience?

This book is targeted at parents of late teenagers with serious aspirations of playing sports at college or professional level. It was of little relevance to a parent trying to ensure that his 11 year old son has a safe, fun or rewarding experience playing hockey, soccer, basketball or lacrosse. I did not understand this from the supporting information, cover etc.

Soundscape Ecology represents a new branch of ecology and it is the result of the integration of different disciplines like Landscape ecology, Bioacoustics, Acoustic ecology, Biosemiotics, etc. The soundscape that is the object of this discipline, is defined as the acoustic context resulting from natural and human originated sounds  and it is considered a relevant environmental proxy for animal and human life.

With Soundscape Ecology Almo Farina means to offer a new cultural tool to investigate a partially explored component of the environmental complexity. For this he intends to set the principles of this new discipline, to delineate the epistemic domain  in which to develop new ideas and theories and to describe the necessary integration with all the other ecological/environmental disciplines.

The book is organized in ten chapters. The first two chapters delineate principles and theory of soundscape ecology. Chapters three and four describe the bioacoustic and communication theories. Chapter five is devoted to the human dimension of soundscape.  Chapters six to eight regard the major sonic patterns like noise, choruses and vibrations. Chapter nine is devoted to the methods in soundscape ecology and finally chapter ten describes the application of the soundscape analysis.

Very Impressed

I am very impressed by the spirituality of this book. It is perfectly contemporary while at the same time perfectly rooted in the past. It is biblical and doctrinal. The author is humble and resigned. Not every part is perfect, that is true. Some passages contain more quotes than original thought, but they are worthwhile quotes nonetheless. I would recommend it to someone, especially if they are not too religious or not very familiar with Christianity.

This collection brings together Paley's three previous volumes of stories: The Little Disturbances of Man (1959; Penguin, 1985. reprint), Enormous Changes at the Last Minute (Farrar, 1974), and Later the Same Day ( LJ 1/86). Paley's inventive style and her funny, feisty, irreverent characters create vivid slices of life. Her stories often concern women coping with children alone, as in "An Interest in Life," where a woman has an affair after her husband deserts her. A continuing character, Faith, is a divorced woman with children who gets her emotional support from her women friends. In "Faith in a Tree," Faith's interests expand to include politics after she witnesses an antiwar demonstration in the park. In "A Conversation with My Father," a writer explains that even a story's terrible ending is not final--the characters could still change. This possibility of hope permeates all Paley's stories, creating a rich treasury of unexpected pleasures and revealing truths. Essential.

Paley is a member of that select breed of writers who become masters of the short story and resist the pressure to produce a novel. This volume gathers together more than 30 years' worth of stellar stories from Paley's best-known collections, The Little Disturbances of Man (1959), Enormous Changes at the Last Minute (1974), and Later the Same Day (1985). This rich compilation presents us with the full spectrum of Paley's voices as well as her observations and interpretations of urban family life and a society that thrives on oppression. An outspoken pacifist, feminist, and self-described "cooperative anarchist," Paley can no more keep her political beliefs out of her fiction than a plant can keep from releasing oxygen into the atmosphere, but the story always comes first. Her cast of stubborn, opinionated, earthy, smart, sassy, and robust characters demand it. Paley writes just as effectively from a man's point of view as a woman's, discerning the ironies of everyone's predicaments, but she writes most poignantly about the frustrations of women stuck in the rigidity of gender roles. Paley's people either have moxie, or tremendous endurance. They're frank about lust, angry about money, and always ready for a good argument. These staccato tales of the city capture of the essence of the changes each decade has brought, while also dramatizing the continuity of human emotions. Grace Paley hasn't written much, but the stories she has written are gems, and all of them (from The Little Disturbances of Man; Enormous Changes at the Last Minute; and Later the Same Day) are collected here. The narrator speaking at the end of one story, ``Wants,'' demonstrates the virtues of Paley's prose: ``I wanted to have been married forever to one person, my ex-husband or my present one. Either has enough character for a whole life, which as it turns out is really not such a long time. You couldn't exhaust either man's qualities or get under the rock of his reasons in one short life.'' Ooh, what delicious writing this is

Grace Paley has that rarest of gifts: a voice all her own. Funny, tough, and compassionate, this voice mirrors her characters, some of whom (especially the eponymous Faith) are people you wish you knew, or already do. At every turn, her characters avoid stereotype, something most self-professed "political" and "feminist" writers fail to do. Three volumes of stories are collected here; the first volume, I think, is the richest. Here Paley is content to represent the hilarious, yet tragic, travails of her characters. In the later volumes, aside from being more experimental in form, she tackles overtly political themes. But the voice never fails her, and even the most dogmatic, contrived story is lifted above the ordinary. Paley never loses her compassion for mankind. At the end of her career, this was her abiding them: when faced with cynicism or compassion, she always extended the latter to her fellow human beings. These are great, tough stories, worthy of reading several times over. Please buy this collection and spread the word. Paley is that dying breed -- an American original.

clearly female, uniquely brilliant

Nearly every book I've read on aging women has included a reference to Grace Paley's "The Long Distance Runner." Here it is, along with 43 other stories Paley has written since the beginning of her writing career. Anticipating an anthology of _stories_, the Paley-ignorant reader is bewildered, awed, and delighted in turns as Paley's darkly metaphorical tales reveal her clever humor and, ultimately, her unflagging hope for humanity. Using common language with an uncommon twist, Paley's descriptions cause the reader to laugh with familiarity: "The table was the enameled table common to our class, easy to clean, with wooden undercorners for indigent and old cockroaches that couldn't make it to the kitchen sink." "The Long Distance Runner" is a powerful allegory about menopause, that mystical time in a woman's life when so much more is happening than the simple cessation of menstrual flow. Paley attributes her success as a writer to the wonderful luck of the birth of the women's movement, which coincided with the publication of her first stories.

About the Author
Philip J. Adler taught college courses in world history to undergraduates for almost thirty years prior to his recent retirement. Dr. Adler earned his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna following military service overseas in the 1950s. His dissertation was on the activity of the South Slav emigres during World War I, and his academic specialty was the modern history of Eastern Europe and the Austro-Hungarian empire. His research has been supported by Fulbright and the National Endowment for the Humanities grants. Dr. Adler has published widely in the historical journals of the U.S. and German-speaking Europe. He is currently professor emeritus at East Carolina University, where he spent most of his teaching career.

Randall L. Pouwels earned his B.A. in history at the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. in history at UCLA. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the history of Islam in East Africa. His book, HORN AND CRESCENT: CULTURAL CHANGE AND TRADITIONAL ISLAM ON THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, 800-1900 (Cambridge, 1987), has become a standard work in African history. THE HISTORY OF ISLAM IN AFRICA (Athens, Oxford, and Cape Town, 2000) was jointly edited with Nehemia Levtzion of Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Widely praised in reviews, it was selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2001 and was made a selection of the History Book Club. In addition, he has written numerous articles and reviews on East African history, the history of Islam in Africa, and historical methodologies. Dr. Pouwels's other research interests include the history of the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, and the history and archaeology of Native Americans. Over the years, his work has been supported by grants and fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Studies Research Council, the National Geographic Society, and the American Philosophical Society. He taught African history for over twenty years at LaTrobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and at UCLA. He has been the Professor of African and Middle Eastern History at the University of Central Arkansas since 1984.

This text is meant to be the backbone reading material in a standard college-level introduction to world history. It is aimed especially at the student encountering the more exotic elements and areas of civilization for the first time, and particularly in junior and community college courses. It has been written from the beginning with such students in mind, and is uniquely equipped with pedagogic devices meant to aid these persons grasp the interrelations among world civilizations. Chapters are keyed to class lecture coverage, with strong emphasis on social and cultural trends and events. Proportionately more space is given to nonwestern peoples than any other text on the market.

Excellent Survey Text for Global View

Adler's World Civilizations is an excellent introductory survey text. The language is pleasant without being banal. Most importantly the text gives attention to a worldview that shows history globally instead of through the Western tinted glasses our texts in High school usually did.

Great for a general reference of history and geography.

I picked this up at a library used book sale of donated items. I paid zero for it as it was used and not many people want these large textbooks around the house.

But after paging through the book it really is very nicely arranged with chapters very logically presented with enough, but not an overwhelming amount of of text to slog through until the next heading appears. I find it very appealing visually with a great balance of maps (nice ones), photos and side panels. This is a book I would have considered keeping after using it in a class.

Sometimes its just nice to reach for a book to read about some battle or treaty or geographic region without using the internet to learn something.

In my case, it will be used for filling in historical periods which I might be curious about. It would be worth a few dollars but I can't say more than $20 for a reference work.
