It shows the basics of crochet so that you can attempt and master any of the stitches. This is a wonderful directory of stitches for anyone interested in crochet. I like the layout of the book, just wish it laid flat for easier use. You can see clearly from the cover what you are getting, how-to close ups, great stitches in colour and charts. There isn't a stitch I don't like, favourites include Alternate, Spider, Sedge, Uneven Berry, Granule, anything involving scallops, shells, waves, chevrons, clusters, raised stitches, loops, lace or fans, Iris, Starburst and Solomon's knot. If you've never bought a crochet stitch book then this book
is a fantastic place to start.
Why not use the stitches to create your own projects.
Crochet is so versatile you'll be amazed
how quickly you'll be designing your own things.
There are a lot of stitch books out there but this one is so different.
It offers so many different types, designs, use of other materials
that other books don't.
I was really amazed by the diversity of the stitches.
They are also explained in both written
and chart format so either way you should be able
to copy the designs.
Different colours, techniques & items such as beads
are used to bring so amazing different styles.
Some would be brilliant for afghans (blankets)
and some would be even better for garments.
At the start of the book is all the information you will need
to recreate the designs within the book;

Despite ongoing debate about the root cause of psychological disorders, most agree that the development of the self is central to the distinction between normality and psychopathology. Yet neuroscientists have been slow to probe the biological basis for our sense of self, focusing instead on states of consciousness. LeDoux (The Emotional Brain), professor at New York University's Center for Neural Sciences, has come up with a theory: it's the neural pathways the synaptic relationships in our brains that make us who we are. Starting with a description of basic neural anatomy (including how neurons communicate, the brain's embryological development and some of the key neural pathways), LeDoux reviews experiments and research, arguing that the brain's synaptic connections provide the biological base for memory, which makes possible the sense of continuity and permanence fundamental to a "normal" conception of self. Brain/mind theorists tread upon sensitive territory when they address the issue of personality. Many will readily concede that the activities of the mind result from physical process in the brain, but they find a purely material explanation of selfhood troubling. LeDoux (Ctr. for Neural Sciences, New York Univ.; The Emotional Brain) puts forth a new, unified theory in which neurology shapes experience and vice versa. The critical locus is the synapses, which convey information and stimulate functions within the brain. The interconnections of the synapses are plastic, shaped by a person's experiences, and thus give rise to unique thoughts and feelings. Memory arises from these, creating a sense of self and personality. LeDoux is not the first to discuss the role of memory in selfhood (see, for instance, Daniel Schacter's Searching for Memory); nor is he the first to stress the importance of synaptic firing in brain/mind interactions (see Gerald Edelman's Bright Air, Brilliant Fire). He does, however, bring together these pieces to render a convincingly integrated theory. It will be of vital interest to those in the field and to informed lay readers who have followed the debates. painless intro to synaptic structure and biochemistry

The book is an introduction to neurology from the particular viewpoint of the synapse and associated biochemistry. The author's specific interest in the field is experimental research into fear circuits in the brain, and the book shows this interest well and it forms the bulk of the examples. It is not the first book in the field that i would recommend to someone just getting interested, it is an "advanced intro" if that is possible, just a little hard going if you have no idea of the terminology or general structures. But it is written to the educated laymen, doesn't require a college degree to understand it, and is a welcome addition to my expanding library on the philosophy of the mind.
The book is well written, flows nicely until the near end,(drags a little just after chapter 6 however, that is why a 4 not a 5 rating) i'd recommend "synaptic sickness" be moved to an appendix if it couldn't be integrated into the body of the book better. The scholarly apparatus is kept to a minimum yet the push to ratify/justify the new knowledge via experimental data and reference to other scientists work is clearly evident and makes the book a good intro to the field, as further study is facilitated. I found the use of concrete experimental examples and the prolific use of diagrams (especially figures 6.4 - 6.6) particularly good(very superior), the book was always engrossing and a stimulating read, not common in books written by scientists who are not teachers as well.
As to particularly important ideas: i would point to chapter 6= "small change" and the systematic analysis of Hebbian plasticity and how long-term potentiation supplies the synaptic justification for memory and learning the key chapter in the whole book. The chapters before are introductory prologue to this idea, and the chapters subsequent are particular examples of how Hebbian plasticity and synaptic change unlie the circuits of the brain and hence become who we are.
And unusual emphasis(compared to the field as a whole) is on the emotional side of the triad: cognition, emotion, motivation, this is due to the author's interest and last book as a result of his professional research into fear circuitry. I appreciate the emphasis as a long overdue correction to neurology being somewhat, like philosophy of the mind, concentrated on the cognition part of the equation. With this emphasis and direction much of the book dedicated to showing fear circuits and like analysis means this ends up with teaching you a wider view of the brain than most introductory books. A good thing.
So i wholehearted recommend the book to anyone who had the patience and interest to finish reading this review. thanks.

LeDoux's Synaptic Self is wonderful !

LeDoux starts his first chapter with a quote from Bart Simpson: "Dad, what is the mind? Is it just a system of impulses or something tangible?" My kind of humor.
LeDoux's Synaptic Self is a wonderful book loaded with clear understandable explanations and insights (his wife, a "fantastic writer," assisted) on how the brain works based on the most current neuroscience (e.g., how neurons/synapses/neurotransmitters/neuro modulators work/don't work, implicit/explicit learning/memory mechanism explanations, nature/nurture considerations, the "mental trilogy" of cognition/emotion/motivation, and much more). The book's bottom-line, he writes, is "you are your synapses." With this book, "know thyself," and even fix thyself, seem more attainable. It's a book I'll reread/study for a while.
The following are quotes from the last chapter:
Life requires many brain functions, functions require systems, and systems are made of synaptically connected neurons. We all have the same brain systems, and the number of neurons in each brain system is more or less the same in each of us as well. However, the particular way those neurons are connected is distinct, and that uniqueness, in short, is what makes us who we are.
What is remarkable is that synapses in all of these systems are capable of being modified by experience... Emotion systems [as an example]... are programmed by evolution to respond to some stimuli, so-called innate or unconditioned stimuli, like predators or pain. However, many of the things that elicit emotions in us or motivate us to act in certain ways are not preprogrammed into our brains as part of our species heritage but have to be learned by each of us. Emotion systems learn by association - when an emotionally arousing stimulus is present, other stimuli that are also present acquire emotion-arousing qualities (classical conditioning), and actions that bring you in contact with emotionally desirable stimuli or protect you from harmful or unpleasant ones are learned (instrumental conditioning.) As in all other types of learning, emotional associations are formed by synaptic changes in the brain system involved in processing the stimuli. Some of the brain's plastic emotional processors include systems involved in detecting and responding to danger, finding and consuming food, identifying potential mates and having sex.
Because synaptic plasticity occurs in most if not all brain systems, one might be tempted to conclude that the majority of brain systems are memory systems. But [as LeDoux argues in chapter 5], a better way of thinking about this is that the ability to be modified by experience is a characteristic of many brain systems, regardless of their specific function. Brain systems, in other words, were for the most part not designed as storage devices - plasticity is not their main job assignment. They were instead designed to perform particular tasks like processing sounds or sights, detecting food or danger or mates, controlling actions, and so on. Plasticity is simply a feature that helps them do their job better.

Good pop neuroscience

This book is as good as a popular science book can be, and explains in easy terms some of the most important concepts in neuroscience. For this it should be widely read. However, Ledoux wants to explain the self, and not only to write a popular book on cognitive neuroscience. Now, given that it is very difficult not to accept that the self at some level is nothing but synapses, Ledoux does seem to base the self on neurobiological mechanisms. But this is no more enlightening than sayying that vision, attention, language, or even qualia are nothing but synapses, claims that at some level must also be correct. So one would expect the bulk of the book to develop principles that tie or at least correlate the self with brain mechanisms. Do we get this in Synaptic Self? well, yes and no.

Ledoux concentrates on memory, having in his last book focused on emotion. He explains memory systems from molecules to circuits, with the classical and most recent findings, including some from his own lab. He also gives a quick overview of the emotional systems of the brain, the working memory complex of the prefrontal cortex, and motivational systems of neuromodulator and brainstem and thalamocortical systems. He calls that the mental trilogy, namely cognition, emotion and motivation. Ledoux also wrote a nice chapter on some brain diseases that seem to alter these functions selectively. And thats it. Ledoux has explained the self. Or has he? Well, memory, emotion, cognition and motivation surely contribute to the making of the self, especially memory. How much of a self is left in a retrograde and anterograde severe amnesic? But this is not saying that putting them together is all the self is about. Its like saying vision, attention and waking are what consicousness is. Vision provides content, attention access, and waking a necesary condition for consicousness, but together they are not the phenomenon in question. I bring out consicousness because Ledoux says the really hard and important question in neuroscience is the self, and not consciousness. To me it seems almost silly to try to understand the former without the latter.

Ledoux then forgets about the feeling of the self itself, the possible bases of it on body schemas and body signals, the primacy of movement. He does touch on volition and free will, and is as naturalistic about these issues as one can be, which I think is a good thing. The final chapter presents 7 principles he can extract from his discussions, and meybe here we can find his theory of the self. Unfortunately, he seems just to add another thing, binding, to the picture. So binding, convergence zones, emotion and motivation, memory, placticity, hebbbian mechanisms of memory, together are the self. Again, I would say they are an important part of the self, but not the self itself. I may be wrong or maybe dogmatic about what would count as an explanation for the self. Maybe there is nothing more to the self than those mechanisms Ledoux lists. But work in theorethical neuroscience like by Damasio, or Patricia Churchland and philosophers like Bermudez show that the self is more complex than Ledoux seems to think.

At the end this book is of value, and I never said it did not make progress on the problem of the neurobiology of the self. However, it does not by any means solve it. It presents a nice theory of the integration of cognitive and affective mechanisms, and manages to cover a great deal of issues in simple terms, and that is always an achievement.

Psychobabble nonsense

There is no other way to say this but it is a terrible book. It was written in the mid-1970's. The lady who wrote it projected Gable's actions from her interest in psychologically analyzing people from a distance. I stopped reading it mid-way thru the 420 or so pages. Sorry I even went that far. Everything is based on speculation as well as treating his first wife's so-called fiction manuscript as the gospel wile reading more into it.

Look, no one is perfect. But it is easy to pick on a dead person by talking to people who had a beef with him or her. The author also told us stuff we didn't care to know about Carole Lombard. It had nothing to add to the story or how she performed.

There was so much that could have been told about the behind-the-scenes stuff in each of his movies. Why didn't she tell us? Because she probably didn't know nor bothered to find out.
I've read over 300 biographies in the past 3 plus years- not an exaggeration. This is in the five worst. Save your money.

Nope, it ain't about Elvis

Clark Gable was The King long before Elvis started shaking his booty and long before Elvis even had a booty to shake! It's refreshing, in this biography, to read what a humble man this gorgeous, virile man had. Far from being the Rhett Butler-egomaniac, Gable actually thought he wasn't "that good-looking!" "I'm just a lucky slob from Ohio," Gable is quoted in the book as telling an interviewer.
Known largely for his on-stage role as Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind, also starring Vivien Leigh -- and his off-screen romance with Carole Lombard, Gable wooed more women than he ever could have bedded, what with those "come hither" eyes and dimples. Every woman who watched Gone With the Wind would have changed places with Vivien in a second in the famous "rape" scene where he roughly sweeps Scarlett in his arms and carries the kicking and screaming wife up the stairs. Of course, anyone who knows anything about love, Scarlett and that movie knows it surely wasn't rape!
Tornabene's book explores Gable's extreme professionalism as an actor and bits and pieces of the private life he chose to hide while alive. He was even described by the media as "boring" because he wouldn't talk about his private life!
Interesting in the book is that this journalist decided to make a most humble move and talk to a pscyhologist about the research to gain a different view of Clark Gable, as research alone provided pieces to the Gable puzzle but not the entire picture.

Ich fand den Hintergrund dieser Geschichte faszinierend und einzigartig: eine Handlung, die sich hauptsächlich aus der Sicht der Protagonistin im Koma abspielt.

Da dies mein erstes Buch ist, welches ich von Joy Fielding gelesen habe, kann ich in Bezug auf ihren literarischen Stil im Vergleich zu ihren anderen Büchern nicht viel sagen. Aber ich fand, dass es ein sehr leichtes Buch war, vielleicht zeitweise zu leicht für den Ernst der Materie.

Ich denke, dass die Ereignisse und Charaktere hätten stärker ausgebaut werden können, und dass sie ein bisschen zu viele Wiederholungen bestimmter Situationen, Gefühle und sogar Phrasen nutzte.

Obwohl die Identität des Täters ein bisschen früh im Buch enthüllt wird, war es keine große Überraschung mehr. Allerdings hat das nicht von der tollen Geschichte abgelenkt. Jedenfalls hätte ich mir diese Enthüllung zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt gewünscht (dass die Autorin hier die Spannung mehr aufgebaut hätte), und dass es zu einem größeren Schock gekommen wäre.

Aber abgesehen davon ist es dennoch eine fesselnde und lesenswerte Geschichte.

Armed with a degree in Behavioral Sciences, American, Liz Clark, spent ten years working with kids in a locked psychiatric ward which gave her an interestingly twisted perspective on things. She warped her views even further by working eight years in the Juvenile Detention Center in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Currently, she works as a Service Coordinator for young children with disabilities. With a youthful enthusiasm and chronically positive outlook, her personality is made apparent in her writing style. Not one to shy away from public speaking or a good chat, her storytelling skills outrage and delight both verbally and in script. Trusty sidekick/butt of most jokes: Australian, Lynne Atkins, an artistic Sign writer by trade, has been a business owner, teacher, manager and a personal assistant. Lynne brings to the mix the organizational ability and finely tuned talents of a taskmaster. With her skills as an accomplished map-reader, an internal GPS system (which, she credits to a past life as the Captain on the historic Pinta), and her eye for photography she was able to navigate their way around the world while capturing it in the lens. Having met in the year 2000 Liz and Lynne have since traveled to over 65 countries and all 7 continents. Between these two, a plethora of adventure, banter, and general shenanigans are never far behind.

I was exhausted when I finished this book! It usually takes me a long time to read a book - and I read it in 2 days and I NEVER read a book in 2 days. I felt like I was right there with these girls on their trip - so many times! And I just could NOT believe how brave they were! I cannot wait to see what the next adventure is for these two girls! Loved it!

A lot of complaining from what sounds like ignorant privileged people. I think towards the end of the book when you mentioned how you had grown and were forever changed by this experience you should have shared examples or how you planned to live your life differently. I also couldn't get over the "Catacombs of Paris" incident. Very embarrassing and disrespectful. You can imagine why some people are not to welcoming to tourists.

She is author of several books, including Rape: Sex, Violence, History and Fear: A Cultural History, which was shortlisted for Mind Book of the Year in 2006. She lives in London.

All animals are equal

Inspired by a pseudonymously written letter asking, "Are women animals?" Bourke, in this is a long, scholarly book proceeded to examine what it means to be a human. The exercise was conducted from various angles and diverse perspectives. It is a rich source of literary examples, starting with Franz Kafka's talking ape "Red Peter" to Derrida's cat that defies categorisation by simply existing, and, Levina's dog, "Bobby" that patently does not distinguish humans into the categories that the Nazis had.

The book, however, rambled along interspersing Human Rights, Darwinian revolution, animal rights, vegetarianism, cannibalism, and various other interesting aspects that distinguish animals from humans and those that make no distinction. The ultimate point being that in spite of clear and ostensible differences, it would be morally wrong to think that we can justifiably treat our fellow men, women, and non-human animals in any way that we would not treat ourselves. In the course of which serious questions are raised, for example, "Do animals have rights?" Questions were also raised about bioethical matters such as whether it is right to have cosmetic surgery, using animal parts for transplantation into humans, using drugs to counter the aging process. The questions cannot be answered fully in most specialist books, so they tended to fall a little flat because Bourke had attempted to do too much with the book.

If the reader is patient he may wish to add another star or two. If he is not, he might subtract one or two stars. This is indeed a fascinating, thought-provoking book that requires determination for one to come to grips with it; and more importantly, to pursue the answers to many of the questions Bourke raised. It has many useful materials but lacks a coherent structure to put them all together. I gave it three stars because I (subjectively) am not fond of the sprawling nature of the discussions, and further, I would reserve judgment on some of the matters that Bourke passed judgment on. For example, "Men and women who undertook rejuvenation treatments are, literally, selling their souls and debasing their bodies in exchange for eternal - or at least extended - life." p. 349.

Perfect!

I received these cards awhile back, along with several books and other decks, from a good friend. The deck is the Pocket Swiss deck, and I was disappointed to learn that I didn't have the accompanying book with the cards! I searched and found several that it could possibly be, and after a great deal of reading, decided this was the book I needed. Boy is it ever!!! I did a self reading and I am very grateful to have this on-spot book. It is FULL of detailed explanations, and various "side" meanings that accompany the card being read. I was amazed to be fair. One card had almost four pages of information! I could not be happier with this addition since Hermes Trismegistus (Greek God) or Thoth (Egyptian God) as he is also known as, is one I have studied for many, many years now, and after reading Corpus Hermeculum and The Emerald Tablets, to have a deck that is dedicated to him is wonderful! I recommend the deck to anyone who is intrigued by Hermes, or is learning about him, and this book is a must have to accompany the deck. Thumbs up!

Well, this book is good for the more advanced. I really like the Crowley Tarot cards; yet, I've been told this is too advanced for a beginner. I don't care... I wanted it. :)

But, the book is a bit hard to understand. I think it gives excellent details about all the symbols. But, there is just so much to swallow for someone new to it. I bet this book is great for those that have a better grasp of Tarot reading. I can't interpret what the interpretations mean. I know that sounds odd, but I just don't know how to apply the information in the book with what my cards show. I get a somewhat jist of it, but I know I'm missing out on alot, since this book has so much detailed information that I just wish I could understand.

The other thing is the book itself was not bound well. It fell apart not too long after I had it, some of the pages separated.

I hope to find books about the Crowley Tarot more easily understood.

A good companion for the Thoth Deck

This is not really a beginner tarot text, but the Thoth deck is not a beginner's deck, either. This is an extremely visual approach to the deck, and brings in a lot of outside material as well. If you choose to the ignore the more esoteric Crowley approaches, e.g. Qabala, there is still plenty here to get you going with this fabulous deck. I say it's not a beginner deck, but with a book this accessible, less experienced readers might be able to get over that hurdle.

While Crowley's "The Book of Thoth" is the definitive text to accompany the Thoth deck--and if you spend a lot of time with the deck, you're going to want to dive into that eventually--this book is very detailed while still being user-friendly. For those new to the Tarot, or to the Thoth deck, this is probably the best place to start. A good bridge between this book and the BOT is Lon DuQuette's *excellent* book about the deck.

The presentation of this material is also very well-done; the layout makes the book easy to use as a reference.

Finally, the spreads in the back alone make this worth the price of admission!
