The approach is strongly influenced by Walter Benjamin’s philosophy of language and Theodor Adorno’s aesthetic theory, but the philosophical thought of other philosophers—notably Plato, Kant, Hegel, Emerson, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein—figures significantly in the reading and interpretation. The essence of the argument is that, despite its damaged condition (standardization, commodification, staleness), language is, as such, by virtue of its very existence, the bearer of a utopian or messianic promise of happiness. Moreover, it is argued that, by reconciling the two senses of sense (sensuous sense and intelligible sense), showing the sheer power of words to create fictional worlds and destroy what they have just created, and redeeming the revelatory power of words—above all, the power to turn the familiar into something no longer familiar, something astonishing or perplexing—the two writers in this study sustain our hope for a world of reconciled antagonisms and contradictions, evoking in the way they freely play with the sounds and meanings of words, some intimations of a world—our world here, this very world, not some heavenly world—in which the promise of happiness would be fulfilled and redeemed. In the first part of the book, reflecting on the poetry of Stevens, Kleinberg-Levin argues that the poet defies the correspondence theory of truth to enable words to be faithful to truth as transformative and revelatory—what Heidegger calls “unconcealment”, translating the Greek. He also argues that in the pleasure we get from the sensuous play of words, there is an anticipation of the promise of happiness that challenges the theological doctrine of an otherworldly happiness and makes the religious experience seem like a paltry substitute. In the second part of the book, Kleinberg-Levin shows how Nabokov inherits Mallarmé’s conception of literature, causing with his word-plays the sudden reduction of the fictional world he has just so compellingly created to its necessary conditions of materiality: white paper, ink, print on the page. We thus see the novel as a work of fiction, as mere semblance; we see its conditions of possibility, created and destroyed before our very eyes. But the pleasure in seeing words doing this, and the pleasure in their sensuous materiality, are intimations of the promise of happiness that language bears. Using a Kantian definition of modernism, according to which a work is modernist if it reveals and questions the inherited assumptions about its necessary conditions of possibility, these studies show how and why both Stevens and Nabokov are exemplars of literary modernism.

Few if any philosophers have had the courage to engage the formal and conceptual difficulties of literary modernism, particularly its regulating idea that, as the poet Stèphane Mallarmé argued, language is made of words but not of the things we use words to produce: concepts, propositions, descriptions, and even expressions of feeling. Not that the literary work lacks such things, but the materiality of its language is irreducible to any of these discursive functions. On the contrary, as David Kleinberg-Levin makes clear in this remarkable book, the sensuous material of language is itself the medium of aesthetic experience as well as an experience of world-making that transforms our relation to how things are. He develops his arguments by way of careful critical readings of Wallace Stevens’s poetry and poetics and by close attention to the self-reflexive features of Vladimir Nabokov’s novels, in which developments of plot and character are always mediated by innovative wordplay and ironic comments on the forms and conventions of fiction-writing that Nabokov himself is employing. Kleinberg-Levin’s principal argument is that, contrary to a good deal of received opinion, the prominence of “sensuous materiality” in poetry and fiction is not a symptom of a decadent aestheticism but the fulfillment of a truly philosophical aesthetics: namely, the transfiguration of our everyday world into genuinely desirable forms of life. Good text for Elec., Mech., or Comp. Engineers

I read this book as part of a systems engineering introductory course. I found it to be very helpful and easy to understand. The book is well organized, and the contents of the various chapters flow together smoothly. One critique is that this book would have benefited from a greater variety of practical examples. Instead it continually used a motor model. While this example was very usefull, I would have liked to have seen some other examples. Overall, a solid text.

Well worth the effort

Very good book for persons who never did a research project before like myself. I learned a lot. It may not be the most exciting book I ever read, but I slowly read it to digest the information and it was well worth the effort. On another note the book arrived earlier than expected.

Solid Read

Femi's book is well organized, succinct, and easy to read. I love that he teaches both the theory as well as the python methodology. As someone with a math and programming background, I did notice some slight errors. However, nothing that detracted from the overall merit of the book. Definitely a solid read for someone trying to get into data science!

Great reference tool

This book is brilliantly done. I own and have used quite a few Pandas for 'x', Python for 'x' titles that go through the basics of the tool, but leave the reader without a clear understanding of the theoretical basis. Mastering Pandas, however, provides the all the necessary context. I used it to level up my skillset quickly while taking a data science course, and I found it invaluable. R users will be delighted to find that there are detailed comparisons between R and Pandas--you can port your knowledge quickly from one context to the other. I gave Mastering Pandas 5 stars because I find that while working, I tend to have it open to use as a quick reference tool.

J. Scott Duvall (PhD. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the coauthor with George H. Guthrie of Biblical Greek Exegesis: A Graded Approach to Learning Intermediate and Advanced Greek and with Terry G. Carter and J. Daniel Hays of the textbook Preaching God's Word: A Hands on Approach to Preparing, Developing and Delivering the Sermon.

J. Daniel Hays (ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is dean of the Pruet School of Christian Studies and professor of Old Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the author of From Every People and Nation, and he has coauthored Grasping God's Word; Preaching God's Word; Journey into God’s Word; The Story of Israel: A Biblical Theology; Iraq: Babylon of the End Times?; Apocalypse; and The Dictionary of Biblical Prophecy. Excellent intermediate-level book on hermeneutics

Grasping God's word is really an excellent intermediate-level book on studying and interpreting the Bible (hermeneutics). It goes into far more depth than more basic introductions to the topic, yet is far more accessible and easier to grasp than more advanced texts like The Hermeneutical Spiral. The approach taught by Duvall and Hays is very practical and easy to remember. To maximize learning you'll want to do as many of the exercises in the book as you have time for. Grasping God's Word is a fine choice both for Sunday School teachers and for a first course in hermeneutics at seminary.

How to Journey With God Through the Bible

Christians generally know they're supposed to read the Bible and that they're supposed to do something about it, but the Bible doesn't always make sense. The Bible was written to an audience that is removed from us by time and culture, so it's easy to miss what the original author intended to communicate to the original biblical audience. Misinterpretation of the Scripture is unfortunately all too prevalent.

In GRASPING GOD'S WORD, J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays walk us through a clear and helpful process for responsibly reading, interpreting, and applying the Bible. They call it the Interpretive Journey, and it's an imaginative and motivating description for what encountering God through the Scriptures is meant to look like. The authors outline five steps in the Interpretive Journey:
1. Grasp the text in their town. What did the text mean to the original audience?
2. Measure the width of the river to cross. What are the differences between the biblical audience and us?
3. Cross the principlizing bridge. What is the theological principle in this text?
4. Consult the biblical map. How does our theological principle fit with the rest of the Bible?
5. Grasp the text in our town. How should individual Christians today live out the theological principle?

The authors spend twenty-two chapters elaborating on the steps of this journey, pointing out important concepts such as context, word studies, who is in control of meaning, and the role of the Holy Spirit in interpretation. The last two sections give us some important insights on specific genres represented in the Old and New Testaments.

The point of GRASPING GOD'S WORD is knowing God more and experiencing the transformative power of God's Word, and this book does a great job of it. There are a lot of really great books out on how to study the Bible. This one is by far my favorite, and I recommend it for anyone who is serious about digging deep into the biblical text.

A book that every Christian should read

This is a highly readable, entry-level textbook on biblical hermeneutics. The authors assume no prior knowledge of biblical hermeneutics on the part of the reader. As such, the material is conveyed in simple, straightforward terms, along with a healthy dose of wit.

The book also strikes a good balance between theory and application. Topics discussed include levels of meaning, different literary genres in the Bible, and the role of the Holy Spirit. Every chapter also ends with applicative exercises serving to reinforce learning. Duvall and Hays do a thorough job of walking the reader through the exercises by providing a wealth of examples of their own.

I found especially helpful the methodical, step-by-step interpretive process that the book uses. I'd daresay its as scientific an approach as biblical hermeneutics can get. We are constantly reminded to understand the historical and literary contexts of the original biblical audience, to understand the meaning of the text and how it should be applied to us today.

A book that I'd recommend every Christian read in order to interpret the Bible correctly.

Not a helpful book. I am a TESOL teacher and coach. I bought this book to help me in coaching an Indian lady in improving her communication skills. This book covers standard stuff, like writing emails and setting meetings, info you can get from any book on business communications. Nothing new here. Not much help about improving language skills and manners, important things for Indian people to learn. Don't waste your money on this.

7 Things I love about this book

# 1 - The FAQ section:
At the end of each chapter there is a FAQ (frequently asked questions) section which presents some highly interesting day-to-day dilemmas with the ideal solution. For example: “My job involves cross-border business. Should I display my Indian identity or dilute it by applying the global ways of doing business?” In this book the reader will get answers to 44 different scenarios that one can easily relate to.

# 2 – The in-depth information

Whatever topic the book author presents, you will notice a lot of in-depth information and advice that other similar etiquette books cover only in a superficial way. For example:
In many etiquette books you will learn about dining etiquette (e.g. the ideal wine-food combination) but in this book (in the “Dining and Entertaining Finesse” section) you will also learn about 10 different types of cheese and what the specific cheese-wine combination should be. Never seen before, great!
In many etiquette books you will come across odour-related issues and how to deal with them. But in the business etiquette book by Shital Kakkar Mehra you will find the answer to mouth odour, smoker’s odour, body odour and feet odour!
In many etiquette books you will learn about the importance of accepting compliments graciously. This book provides interesting insights on how compliments are being perceived in different parts of the world and gives you concrete examples of what you should NOT say (rejecting the compliment, underplaying it, making others look stupid, being cocky, deflecting the compliment or being completely lost for words).

# 3 - Well researched resources.
The fact that also other interesting book resources have been mentioned showed that the book author researched her topic well and also didn’t hesitate to give credit where credit is due. It motivated me to put some of them on my reading wish list.

# 4 - Some personal (international) experierences.
Shital Kakkar Mehra used the power of storytelling by sharing some of her own or other business professionals’ personal experiences. This approach worked very well since it helped to emphasise certain points. Adding personal episodes is something that always adds credibility and makes the whole message more memorable and meaningful.

# 5 - The comparison: Indian vs. International etiquette
I really loved the comparisons between Indian etiquette and other countries’ etiquette rules in this book. Usually etiquette books focus only on one specific country’s etiquette rules (depending on the book author’s nationality) or they talk about the different etiquette rules by listing them country by country.

The business etiquette book by Shital Kakkar Mehra had a bit a different approach in giving you the direct comparison between Indian customs and other Western or Asian countries, making also a comparison between monochromic and polychromic countries. For example, how Indians and Americans view contracts, Indian dress attire and international business attire, the seating protocol in Indian companies vs. the arrangement in China and Japan, how touching a stranger’s child and calling them cute is interpreted differently in India compared to Germany, the extent to which small talk should be discussed in Middle East, Latin America, Europe or Asia. Where in this world is alcohol consumption considered as an integral part of business entertaining and where is it an absolute taboo? In what countries is making personal calls at work considered normal and where would it be inappropriate? In this book you will find all these answers. For me personally, the most memorable example of cultural differences was the story of an Indian Executive and a German Executive when they visited each other’s countries (p. 276

# 6 - The visual images.
Out of all the etiquette books that I’ve read so far, the business etiquette book by Shital Kakkar Mehra is the only etiquette book that included the most useful images. It covers several topics in a very visual way. For example, do you know: the difference between a cut-away collar and a wing-tip collar, the difference between a single-breast suit and a double-breast suit, the meaning of hands clasped behind the back? Do you know how much the distance between the social/public zone and the personal zone is, how a Tom Collings glass and a highball glass look like? How do you exchange business cards at a cocktail party? Do you know where the principal guest, principal host and their interpreters are sitting at a table? What is the difference between a glove handshake and a bone-crusher handshake? In this book you will find all the answers to these questions and much more. Often just words don’t suffice, and seeing additional pictures makes it surely easier to remember. Well done for including visuals, it does make a difference!

# 7 - New interesting topics.
There were some other new topics that general etiquette books don’t focus on in much detail. For example, elevator etiquette, safety tips for female business professionals when travelling abroad, dealing with sexual harassment at the workplace, restroom etiquette and international dining do’s and don’ts. Knowing the right etiquette rules when dealing with interpreters (before, during and after using their services) was a topic that was highly interesting. I did not find anything on this topic in other etiquette books so far. Learning about different types of bosses (the alcoholic boss, the workaholic boss, the bully, the bragging boss) and certain employees (gossip monger, the show-off, the human encyclopaedia, Mr/Ms Impolite, the over-friendly cling wrap) and how to deal with them is surely something everyone should learn!

How would I rate the book?

I would give the book “Business Etiquette: A Guide for the Indian Professional” a 9.5 out of 10. I would have given it a 10/10 if those professionals who were involved in publishing this book would have paid a bit more attention to detail. I was surprised to spot some mistakes here and there. However, I must say that after reading lots of books, it’s still a rarity nowadays to find a book that is 100 % flawless. Being an Italian citizen, I do not fully agree with the description on how pasta – spaghetti and penne – should be eaten the authentic Italian way (see p. 229).
