About the Author

Hal Thurman retired in May 1994 after 24 years of teaching in the Earth Sciences Department of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. Interest in geology led to a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma A&M University, followed by seven years working as a petroleum geologist, mainly in the Gulf of Mexico. Here his interest in oceans developed, and he earned a master's degree from California State University at Los Angeles, then joined the Earth Sciences faculty at Mt. San Antonio College. Hal Thurman is also the author of Introductory Oceanography and has co-authored a marine biology textbook, written articles on the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic Oceans for the 1994 edition of World Book Encyclopedia, and served as a consultant on the National Geographic publication, Realms of the Sea. He enjoys going to sea on vacations with his wife Iantha.

Al Trujillo teaches at Palomar Community College in San Marcos, California, where he is co-Director of the Oceanography Program. He received his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of California at Davis and his master's degree in geology from Northern Arizona University, afterwards working for several years in industry as a developmental geologist, hydrogeologist, and computer specialist. A1 began teaching in the Earth Sciences Department at Palomar in 1990 and in 1997 was awarded Palomar's Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has contributed to other Prentice Hall Earth science textbooks, including Earth, 7th Edition and Earth Science, 10th Edition. He is currently working with Hal Thurman as a co-author on Introductory Oceanography, 10th Edition. In addition to writing and teaching, Al works as a naturalist and lecturer aboard natural history expedition vessels in Alaska and the Sea of Cortez/Baja California. His research interests include beach processes, sea cliff erosion, and computer applications in oceanography. A1 and his wife, Sandy, have two children, Karl and Eva.

Welcome! You're about to embark on a journey that is far from ordinary. Over the course of this term, you will discover the central role the oceans play in the vast global system of which you are a part.

The book's content was carefully developed to provide a foundation in science by examining the vast body of oceanic knowledge. This knowledge includes information from a variety of scientific disciplines—geology, chemistry, physics, and biology—as they relate to the oceans. However, no formal background in any of these disciplines is required to successfully master the subject matter contained within this book. Our desire is to have you take away from your oceanography course much more than just a collection of facts. Instead, we want, you to develop a fundamental understanding of how the oceans work.

This book is intended to help you in your quest to know more about the oceans. Taken as a whole, the components of the ocean—its sea floor, chemical constituents, physical components, and life forms—comprise one of Earth's largest interacting, interrelated, and interdependent systems. Because humans are beginning to impact Earth systems, it is important to understand not only how the oceans operate, but also how the oceans interact with Earth's other systems (such as its atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere) as part of a larger picture. Thus, this book uses a systems approach to highlight the interdisciplinary relationship between oceanographic phenomena and how those phenomena affect other Earth systems.

To that end—and to help you make the most of your study time—we focused the presentation in this book by organizing the material around three essential components:

Concepts: General ideas derived or inferred from specific instances or occurrences (for instance, the concept of density can be used to explain why the oceans are layered).

Processes: Actions or occurrences that bring about a result (for instance, the process of waves breaking at an angle to the shore results in the movement of sediment along the shoreline).

Principles: Rules or laws concerning the functioning of natural phenomena or mechanical processes (for instance, the principle of sea floor spreading suggests that the geographic positions of the continents have changed through time).

Interwoven within these concepts, processes, and principles are hundreds of photographs, illustrations, real-world examples, and applications that make the material relevant and accessible (and maybe sometimes even entertaining) by bringing the science to life.

New in this edition are web-based Environmental Issues in Oceanography (EIO) features that are designated within selected chapters by a special notation. Each EIO calls attention to a content-related environmental concern, many of which are the result of human interaction with the marine environment. The EIO features are web-based activities with worksheets in an accompanying workbook. The EIO exercises have been specially designed by two dedicated environmental scientists (Dan Abel of Coastal Carolina University and Robert McConnell of Mary Washington College). Page xix of this Preface explains the EIO feature in more detail.

Ultimately, it is our hope that by understanding how the oceans work, you will develop a new awareness and appreciation of all aspects of the marine environment and its role in Earth systems. To the Instructor

The seventh edition of Essentials of Oceanography is designed to accompany an introductory college-level course in general or physical oceanography taught to students with no formal background in mathematics or science. Like previous editions, the goal of this edition of the textbook is to clearly present the relationships of scientific principles to ocean phenomena in an engaging and meaningful way. Further, this edition has benefited from being thoroughly student reviewed and edited by hundreds of students.

This edition has also been reviewed by a dozen instructors from leading institutions across the country. As one reviewer of the sixth edition stated, "The material is presented in a nicely organized fashion, with clarity and in a readable style. The diagrams are well done and the tables neatly delineate passages of text into a simple, presentable form. The boxes provide interesting diversions to the text, and are nicely linked in terms of their general interest and importance to the chapter material. The `Students Sometimes Ask...' sections are a neat trick for engaging the reader in additional topics, and these follow nicely from the level of the chapters."

The 15-chapter format of this textbook is designed for easy coverage of the material in a 15- or 16-week semester. For courses taught on a 10-week quarter system, the instructor may need to select those chapters that cover the topic and concepts of primary relevance to their course. Chapters are self-contained and thus can be covered in any order. Following the introductory chapter (Chapter 1, which covers the general geography of the oceans, a historical perspective of oceanography, the reasoning behind the scientific method, and a discussion of the origin of Earth, the atmosphere, the oceans, and life itself), the four major academic disciplines of oceanography are represented in these chapters:

• Geological oceanography (Chapters 2, 3, 4, and parts of Chapters 10 and 11)
• Chemical oceanography (Chapter 5 and part of Chapter 11)
• Physical oceanography (Chapters 6-9 and parts of Chapters 10 and 11)
• Biological oceanography (Chapters 12-15)

However, we believe that oceanography is at its best when it links together several scientific disciplines and shows how they are interrelated in the oceans. Therefore, this interdisciplinary approach is a key element of every chapter.

One of the major additions to this edition of the text is the inclusion of web-based "Environmental Issues in Oceanography" (EIO) features within selected chapters. EIO features are on-line projects designed to: add relevance to the material by tying the concepts in the text to environmental issues, involve students in critical-thinking exercises, and help students better evaluate and understand the ecological significance of problems that have been in the forefront of recent news stories. Each EIO can be found on-line at http://www.prenhall.com/oceanissues and the projects can be completed in the accompanying workbook for submission. The EIO projects are authored by two environmental scientists (Dan Abel of Coastal Carolina University and Robert McConnell of Mary Washington College) with a special interest in critical thinking regarding environmental issues. Liked the thinking behind selection of models and the uniform conceptual structure for explaining the models. Some models within this intro seem very academic and irrelevant from a corporate use perspective. However, I bought the book and look forward to learning other models.

A new angle and a great read

Pacific Eldorado combines a colorful and highly readable history of California with an innovative interpretation of the region and state. Influenced by today's global interconnections, scholars have called for more globally informed and embedded accounts of America's past. Books and courses on the Atlantic World are now being supplemented by research on the Pacific Rim that challenges the dominant east-west narrative of American history. Osborne's textbook focuses this new lens on California, bringing to light new maritime connections and making us see older inland contexts anew. His book is the first text to produce a sweeping backstory for the Pacific shift in America's trade relations and to place California's long history in its wider geographic, demographic, and political settings. It's a great read and a real achievement.

If you want to read what made California great and a leader in the world economy

Pacific Eldorado is a gripping book within the context of living in California and the world at large. The very title is intriguing and Thomas Osborne leaves no doubt about the vibrant and exciting history of California that came about with the global connections of the maritime world. Quite a fascinating and historical viewpoint that I had not hitherto read much about but which defines California, the Golden State. If you want to read what made California great and a leader in the world economy, then this is the book for you. It has a clear and readable quality for a non-scholarly person like me and in every chapter I was easily transported into another place and time. There is nothing laborious or drawn-out about this wonderful narrative. The layout of the book is superb and I particularly liked the shaded introductory overview of each chapter, it immediately set the scene and drew me in. With all its heroism, inequity, exploitation and adventure it is history which we can all identify with, and which ultimately becomes The California Dream for all of us.

I love California history

I love California history, so it was natural for me to pick up Pacific Eldorado and read it. I enjoyed the fact that the author provided profiles of fascinating characters who gave some life to our state's history. For example, profiling Alfred Kroeber and his work with the Yahi, and his efforts with Ishi was very informative. Also, the fact that the author provided such detail on the voyages of the Spanish to California addressed a part of California history that is not well understood by many in our state. I thought his use of timelines for each chapter was helpful to the reader. I would continually refer back to them as I was reading the book. Finally, I thought he address the social history of our state in a balanced manner. California's history with minorities surely is an ongoing process of change and assimilation, and the author does a good job of presenting this. Basically, an excellent history of our state from a different perspective.

The Pentateuch (its Greek name, but also known as the Torah by the Hebrews) consists of the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. From Adam and Eve in the Garden, to Noah's Ark, to Moses' parting of the Red Sea, to its conclusion with the death of Moses, the Pentateuch contains some of the most important and memorable stories in Western civilization. In this richly detailed work, which has become a standard in the field, renowned biblical scholar Joseph Blenkinsopp unravels (as Harold Bloom did in The Book of J) the radical scholarly opinions on just where these ancient and powerful stories come from, how they were formed, and what significance they have today. In the classroom, when professors cover these books of Moses, they turn to Dr. Blenkinsopp's classic for reliable, accessible discussions of all the important details.

Great introductory book

Blenkinsopp's introductory reference on the Pentateuch is excellent for that purpose. It's basic, it gets to the point. Hardly any parts are dry. His analysis of the text focuses on what he calls the 'interpretive process' starting with how the text interprets itself in its stages of composition. (141-3) In that respect it reads almost like a 'pocket' commentary on the text trying to stake it in its proper life-context, which is more welcoming than a trite analysis of the sources. He sees more unity in the Pentateuch than many other scholars, although he argues for the later dates of the primary sources. These address the exilic and postexilic situations. Here one can probably detect the influence of Van Seters, whose work Blenkinsopp discusses in chapter 2 continuing on into chapter 3. But Blenkinsopp makes many acute observations of his own throughout the book that are convincing. But there's not enough discussion of the prehistory of the Pentateuchal narratives. If the patriarchal sagas, for instance, had an original setting in preexilic times (113-16) although their incorporation in the Pentateuch as a whole might address exilic or post exilic times (e.g. 102), one still wants to know more about the earlier period, if possible.

This book is not for newbies beginning to study the Pentateuch, although at the beginning Blenkinsopp seems he couldn't decide. At one point he translates a German quote [6] but leaves untranslated a French quote. [20] He also condescends an almost Sunday school summary of the Pentateuchal story (31-3) written as if the reader is completely unfamiliar with it, but then he ascends into a discussion which lasts the remaining length of the book that no one needing such a summary would understand. Excellent Resource--But Not Recommended for Beginners

This book by Blenkinsopp is an excellent resource for the study of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible, also called the Torah or the Books of Moses). Though I do not recommend it for beginners who are just initiating their study of the Pentateuch, it will prove of great value for those who may be in the intermediate stage of study (and beyond) who wish to explore a healthy critique of the four-source hypothesis which has come to dominate this field of study.
Chapter One is especially valuable as Blenkinsopp provides an historical overview of Pentateuchal scholarship to date. This chapter brings the reader up to par and offers the author a starting point for his readable critique. In short, Blenkinsopp suggests that the hard lines of Pentateuchal source theory should be softened so that a multitude of influences can be discovered and appreciated. Perhaps the greatest insight of this author is the realization that no critical theory is perfect and that the insights of numerous theories can often prove useful.

Shouldn't be on the reading list for beginners

I've just struggled through the first two chapters only because it's on the essential reading list
Shouldn't an "introduction" book be more accessible for newbies?

My impression so far has been - very odd mix of apparently banal ( and non-systematic) observations expressed with very obscure language.
Take for example the statement in the first chapter that laws, lists and genealogies occupy one third more space than the narrative in the Pentateuch ( hmm.. one third of what? I spent 5 minutes trying to figure out the math, it is it the way to say "narrative occupies 1/3 of the entire Pentateuch; laws,lists and genealogies the other 2/3"? )

It certainly feels like it aims at a very knowledgeable and experienced reader; it is full with allusions, names, academic hints, terms which probably make sense for someone with extensive background in Biblical studies

I just started my studies so when he throws at me something like "Second Commonwealth" or presenting critique of someone's views without presenting the ideas, I'm lost

I will keep struggling with it because ,first, it's on the essential reading list and , second, so many people claim that he is not easily accessible bu good.

Hopefully later I will find it out myself

I suppose this book is good if you're just starting out. But there's little detail and its very short.

Better off with google if you are already familiar with spring-data, JPA or Hibernate.

A really good intro with good examples

I found this was a good book for getting upto speed quickly with spring data. The examples on github are pretty good and the author takes a lot of care to write good tests. The authors website is pretty useful too
