Great Book on Designing Electronic Circuits

The book is written for M.I.T. physicists and other scientists who need to design their own test equipment. Thus it is not a cookbook, but it is very practical and goal-oriented. It discusses many standard circuits and describes exactly how and why they work, jumping right into methods used to analyze them (KVL, KCL, Norton and Thevenin equivalences).

As an example of the clear approach to circuit analysis, it starts with circuits that use op-amps because they are easy to understand (i.e., as black boxes). (It also includes their real-world limitations and manufacturer's specifications.) Only later does it describe (and analyze) transistor circuits. Of course, many more circuits (e.g., CMOS, digital) are described (and analyzed), but the important point is it gives you the tools to analyze correctly the circuits for yourself.

If you like being able to understand precisely what is going on, and don't want to be babied, THIS IS THE BOOK.

Because these applications involve increasingly sophisticated concepts in signal processing, this book includes practical introductions to network theory, linear system theory, modulation and detection, noise, guarding and shielding, and analog and digital instrumentation. Thus, this book can be used as a textbook for an introductory first course in electrical engineering, as a textbook for one-semester "Electronics for Scientists and Engineers" survey course, or as a self-study primer for the professional scientist or engineer who needs additional background in the theory and practice of electronics.

The lack of an ingredient index makes me question why anyone needs to buy the book rather than just rely on the internet

I don't have a huge collection of cocktail books, but I have several and I thought I'd like an encyclopedic type of book. I like to start with a cocktail book's introductory sections, and this book has very good sections on bar tending basics, the bartender's kit, glassware, garnishes and key ingredients.

This is a huge collection of recipes, presented in alphabetical order by the name of the drink; i.e., not broken down into sections by type of cocktail or main ingredient. Each recipe includes a small color photograph of the drink and a short, straightforward description of its ingredients and preparation. Following that, the editors give a star rating, their one-sentence assessment under the subhead "We Say" and, in some cases, a one-sentence description of the drink's origin.

If all you're looking for is a quick reference, the book is fine. There are 3000+ recipes, so you're likely to find most drinks whose names you know. But considering that I can find any drink recipe and a lot more in an instant on the internet, I really wanted the book to offer something more; something of the magic and romance of mixology. But there is little of that here.

What's more, there is a serious and surprising negative. I would expect an encyclopedic treatment to include a thorough index, but all this has is an index by specific brands of liquor with whose proprietors the editors have partnered. That's advertising, not indexing. The text makes it clear that there is an ingredient index at the editors' online site--and there is--but that begs the question why to buy this book at all, rather than just rely on the internet.

I was also surprised to find a number of inconsistencies within the text and between the book and the website when it comes to drinks' star ratings. For example, the Young Man Cocktail is rated 4 stars in the book, but only 1 star on the website; the Amatitan Twist is rated 4 stars in the main part of the book, but 5 stars in the back, under the Luxardo Maraschino Originale heading in the featured brand index.

If you really feel the need for an encyclopedic cocktail book, I'd say this is a decent choice, with the highlight being the introductory sections and the lowlight the lack of an ingredient index. But I'm a lot more likely to stick with the DiffordsGuide website.

A great compendium of drink recipes.

So you know how there are all those drink books out there, which just have page and page of drink recipes, that only give you the name, the ingredients and amounts, and five words on how to mix them? There are a lot of those out there. And they mostly stink.

This book is like those, but does it sooo much better.

So you get 800 recipes arranged alphabetically. I have seen some complaints about this, from people who think that the recipes should be arranged by main ingredient. But if you hear about a drink, and you don't know the ingredient list, you would want to look it up by name anyways. So being listed alphabetically does not bother me.

After a nice introductory section covering all the basics, you get the recipes.

Each drink is then listed by name, and then you are told whether it is a new recipe or perhaps a key recipe.

A key recipe is a drink that can be made with a combination of the 14 key ingredients listed at the beginning of the book. Quite a nice feature if you are just starting out, and building your home bar, put together the 14 key ingredients and you can easily make a couple hundred drinks from this book.

So you get a name, and an indicator or new or key.

The you get a rating from disgusting to excellent. I haven't noticed a drink actually listed as disgusting, but perhaps there is one in here.

You given a color photo of the drink, so y ou can either see if you may want to try it, or how you may want your finished product to look.

Next, a recommended glass to serve the drink in.

A recommended garnish.

And method to use when making the drink.

Then you get the actual recipe. The recipes are listed in amounts called "shots" which means they don't use ounces or milliliters. I equate a shot to an ounce, but you could also just use a small shot glass then to make all of your drinks. Makes it easy, so you don't need a jigger or measuring cup.

Finally you get a a little review of the author's personal thoughts on the drink and a sentence or two on the drinks history if you want to impress someone.

So if you are just looking for a book with a huge amount of recipes, this is the best book out there for that. Great Compendium of Recipes

One complaint of prior editions of this book was the lack of an ingredient index. I purchased this book based on the over 3000 recipes and the promise of an ingredient index to help me locate recipes containing certain ingredients. I received a good-looking book with a great layout and professional photos and appearance. It certainly has the recipes, but the index is not quite as expected. There is a list of name brands at the end of the book, and for each product there is a list of recipes in which they are used. All recipes are not indexed. At the end of the book is a page advising the reader that recipes may be searched by ingredient at the author's website. The list of the world's best cocktail bars is missing.

The usual introductory information about the tools of the trade, techniques, and garnishes is also included.

If you're looking for a great-looking encyclopedia of recipes, you probably won't be able to beat this book. I recommend it.

An unforgettable story

I've always been a fan of Italian literature. But, I don't really know what it is that makes me like books by Italian authors so much. Perhaps it's the way they write; like good old storytellers. Perhaps it's the subjects they occupy themselves with; like love and remembrance. Or perhaps they seem familiar to me because I also come from a country that's washed by the Mediterranean Sea. Whatever the reason, Italian books make me feel good, and the one at hand does that better than most.

One More Day is the story of two seemingly different people that cross paths time and again. At the beginning that happens by pure luck, but as time goes by they start trying to steal glimpses of each other at any given chance. He's Giacomo and she's Michela, and their story is a story of love and loss, of failure and new beginnings.

As we follow the heroes from Italy to New York, and finally to Paris, we get to know them very well; and we get to like them. They are very human, full of weaknesses and fear, full of hopes and dreams. I guess one could say that the whole story revolves around dreams. The dream of getting away from everything and everyone that keeps you trapped in a cage; the dream of starting anew in a different land; the impossible dream of learning to love all over again by playing a game.

That's what Giacomo and Michela do, they play the game of love, time and again, but not for very long. Win or lose, at first that doesn't seem to matter to them. What matters is to get to know each other well, and to get to enjoy what each of them has to offer. They meet, they talk, they drink, they listen to great music and they make love, and the words flow like a serene stream on the page: "I wanted to become a hunter of emotions and memories," he says. "We have been kicked outside of ourselves," she states. "She was the door I had the courage to open," he thinks and smiles.

I could keep writing quotes for a long time, but I won't do it, since some of the magic of this book can be found in them, and I wouldn't like to take that pleasure away from you.

I will tell you though, that if you are someone who enjoyed movies like Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight (yes, that great Paris trilogy), you will love this book. The prose is exquisite, the plot is simple and yet intriguing, and the feelings are as real as one could ever find in the pages of a novel. The author seems to inhabit the bodies and the souls of his characters and thus manages to give us a story that's hard to forget. This novel is a must-read for me.

It has taken me a long time to finish this novel, but that was only because I was so enthralled by its heroes and their world that I wished it could go on and on. Of course, there are other books, as there are other stories; stories that remind us about the most important things in life; like how much it matters to be our own selves and chase our own impossible dreams. Just like Giacomo and Michela did.

Italians fall in love in New York

This is a very talky kind of Euro-style love story. Giacomo, an Italian who likes to sleep with many women without too much commitment, becomes obsessed with a woman he see on the tram every morning while commuting to work. Eventually, she speaks to him, only to reveal that she's about to move to New York for a new job. Giacomo can't get her out of his mind and eventually follows and tracks her down. It appears she was just as obsessed with him.

There follows a 10-day love affair in which the two commit fully to each other, knowing that Giacomo must eventually return to Europe. This part of the book, where they reveal their secrets, fantasies, fears and hopes, is the sweetest and most successful in the book. It is also a kind of love letter to Manhattan from a European perspective.

Sometimes, we get a little too much information in this book. I don't think we need to know about the protagonist's bowel movements, for example.

Comparing this to a US-style romance, I would say there is much more introspective talk -- the characters deliver long soliloquies - and much less sex. But this is a nice change. I enjoyed it.

Captivating love story

This was an excellent book. The kind that you can get lost in and look forward to reading in all your spare moments.

Giacomo and Michela ride the same tram to work every morning in Italy. Giacomo desperately yearns to see her each morning as he boards the tram. From their stolen glances at each other and their reflections in the tram's windows, it becomes quite clear that they have "noticed" each other. One fateful morning, Michela finally speaks to Giacomo, inviting him for coffee. She's leaving the next day for New York City as she's relocated her job. Feeling a myriad of emotions, Giacomo is tentative and doesn't ask for her email or forwarding information. However, Michela leaves an envelope from her NYC office on the table as she leaves for the rest room. Giacomo jots down the address and stews for several months about whether to make contact with the woman who captivated him on the morning tram rides.

As he grapples with this decision, he is supported by the friendship of Silvia, a former girlfriend and lover, now his best friend. Giacomo's love life is a bohemian existence. He loves to travel, work and make love in a multitude of cities. He is not a gigilo, he is just a product of his experiences with unfaithful girlfriends and the effects of a father who abandoned him. One of the best aspects of the book is the inherent goodness of Giacomo.

Of course, Giacomo decides to find Michela in NYC. She is a fascinating character with unconventional ideas and fiercely independent. The dialogue is so unexpected and interesting which lends to the gripping nature of the book. Their physical passion for each other as well as dining at a wide array of eateries in NYC are a luxurious read. One doesn't know how this unique relationship will pan out, but you're rooting for them the whole way.

I have read many of Mr. Dotts' books but 'Thoughtless Magic and Manifestations' has already become my favorite of all his works with the first read (which I had to do straight through in one sitting because I could not put it down!). In his bestselling personable style, Richard Dotts makes me feel like a dear friend with whom he is sharing his lifelong spiritual journey to enlightenment. For me, this book brings together all his other books and succinctly tells the reader how to finally put away those limiting thoughts and feelings that derail us from manifesting what is our birthright .. He draws the line in the proverbial sand on the misconceptions created by the contemporary adaption of the Law of Attraction into the manifestation process. We are not attracting anything but have the power within us to claim what is rightfully already ours through creating the life we truly desire. It does not require anything but "pure intention" and not holding on to feelings of self-doubt, worry and guilt.
I could go on but I know that I will reread (over and over) this wonderful book to refine my own path of manifestation and I think you should too. Highly recommended for everyone wanting to understand this "Thoughtless Magic" to manifestation through what Mr. Dotts calls "Non Verbal Protocols". Also, even if you have not read any of Richard Dotts' books before this is still a great starting point as I really think this is his best yet.

The Best So Far

This was an amazing book. In fact, I'd say that it was quite possibly the best book I've read by Richard Dotts thus far, and I've read all of his books.

It does take a bit of practice to get this, but if you can get the basic idea, you will feel so much better in a short period of time. I believe this is the key to simple, effortless, instant manifestations.

An Insight from Dotts that has Changed My Life

I wasn't originally very interested in being "thoughtless", but I like most of Dotts' books and the reviews for this one were high, so I tried it out. This book has an insight that has totally blasted my manifestation visualizations to a new level. By using the method outlined in his book, I was able to discover just how muddled and contaminated my visualizations were with negative feelings. Somehow, I had been slightly glossing over tiny feelings of negativity with statements like, "I have now manifested X dollars" or "I am a size such-and-such." Saying the words to myself covered over the tiny bad feelings, and because I felt a lot of good while I was telling myself these things, I figured everything was fine. Dotts' method doesn't allow you to use words (at least not often), so I had to really deeply focus on the feelings themselves with no commentary. I was amazed to discover just how ambivalent my feelings had been and how much I had glossed over, and I was able to refine my visualizations to feel MUCH more positive. This has already been making a difference in my life, and I intend to continue this technique.
One thing I wish Dotts had included was whether we should be concerned if we have images in our minds when we do these visualizations. Technically, a thought doesn't have to be verbal--it could be an image, a memory of a smell, whatever. (Dogs and prelinguistic children don't have language, but they still have thoughts and do thinking.) Since Dotts seems to use "thought" and "words to yourself" as interchangeable, it was a little confusing as to how we're supposed to handle thoughts that come in other forms. Is it okay to still picture your desire to yourself? I've been keeping images in my meditations, and it seems to be working fine. (It also sounds a little weird to say you can't have pictures in your mind in your "visualization"!) So I think the technique allows images, but I'm not totally sure.
